Metroidvania Coverage on Youtube
YouTube coverage of Metroidvania games has boomed significantly recently. Pikusaru and NO4 over on our Discord have been very kind to send a lot of that coverage our way. There are a few compilation lists and a couple of review round-ups that we’d like to share:
Best Upcoming Metroidvania Games – A Trailer Compilation
Free Spirited Gamers have put together a nice compilation of trailers for upcoming Metroidvania games. It’s a great way to see some sample gameplay to help you get excited for what’s coming.
You can see the trailer for the following games in this video:
Flynn: Son of Crimson
Hollow Knight Silksong
Axiom Verge 2
Vigil: The Longest Night
Heart Forth Alicia
The Siege and the Sandfox
They also include a link for each Store Page in their video description.
Top 20 Upcoming 2D Action Games for Nintendo Switch
On the Switch specific side of things, F Game Killer has put together a list of upcoming 2D Action games which includes many Metroidvania games.
The Metroidvanias included on this list (Low fit to Perfect Fit):
Gestalt: Steam & Cinder
Record of Lodoss War – Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth –
The Siege and the Sandfox
Shantae and the Seven Sirens
Rune Fencer Illyia
Rubi: The Wayward Mira
Castle in the Darkness 2
Axiom Verge 2
3000th duel bonus game
Panzer Paladin has an interview confirming it’s not a Metroidvania, and for Ageless we got a response from Team17 that it is a focused narrative puzzle platformer. Both the games look awesome however, so don’t ignore them! We are looking to confirm Infinite: Beyond the Mind currently – we hope it is a Metroidvania because we need more local co-op Metroidvania games to play.
SNESDrunk’s Games Similar to Super Metroid List
I’m a long time fan of SNESDrunk and his lightning fast presentation style. His channel is a great way to get some bite-sized info about games you may not have heard of from the Retro Era. Just yesterday he released a list very relevant to our interests, so I absolutely had to include it in our round up today.
Nerrel’s Savage Metroidvania Review Roundups
I’m always encouraging everyone to get a wide variety of opinions on any of the games we review, and Nerrel certainly offers up a differing opinion. He has a tongue-in-cheek approach as he boldly presents what may be some unpopular opinions – and I personally like the cut of his jib even if I don’t agree with much of what he says. I am however especially happy to see someone give video review coverage of Environmental Station Alpha. I recommend checking these videos out.
Unbound: Worlds Apart Prologue
My apologies for not covering this in last week’s update. Unbound: Worlds Apart has released its initial trailer which is available for free on Steam. It has a puzzle platformer focus, with a dual world mechanic involving portals. Definitely worth checking out.
The Itch.io Game Metroidvania Game Jam Results
Another item that I should have covered a couple of weeks ago. You may remember our announcement for the Metroidvania game jam back in February. Well, it has concluded, and there are 16 games now available that you can check out. Most of them are free, though some are accepting donations. It’s always fun to see creativity that goes into these tight deadlines. Click here to see the list.
New Steam Pages
It’s rare to see completely insane concepts like the kind you’d see in the late 80s and early 90s in the modern era, but Airhead definitely fits into that category. You’re a body, and you discover a head-like creature that is constantly leaking air – which threatens its life. Use air tanks to keep the head-creature inflated while you explore for a better way to keep it alive.
Bad Run is a spin-off of Bad Pad, which we reviewed at the end of 2019. One of my favorite things about Bad Pad was its style, so more from that universe is definitely welcome. It appears that Bad Run is a variety game, including runner style gameplay as well as an explorable Metroidvania style castle. If you don’t want to wait until the end of this month, it’s also available right now on Android.
Rogue Legacy 2
The first Rogue Legacy was a fun casual novelty that we quite enjoyed, so naturally we’re excited to see how a sequel might expand on what was already a fantastic idea. Hopefully it’s more Metroidvania, but even if it’s more of the same it’ll be a safe bet for entertainment. We don’t have any confirmation yet, but I assume this will be on all major consoles besides being on Steam.
A “pacifist” Metroidvania where the goal is to complete your intergalactic species database by collecting samples of various life forms. Since it’s a non-combat game, the challenge then comes from its platforming focus. I think it has absolutely perfect aesthetic for its quirky concept.
Not a lot of details on the plot are avasilable on the store page right now, but it gets right to the point on what you might expect from a gameplay standpoint. It’s a Platforming focused Metroidvania, but you’ll also be finding weapons along with the expected upgrades, suggesting at least a minor combat focus. This one will be out the soonest, releasing on April 22nd.
