On the first of each month or the last day of the previous month, we report on what we are doing to achieve our goal to review every Metroidvania game. This announcement includes our schedule of reviews and articles for the upcoming month, as well as any planned site adjustments or other important announcements.

Monthly Game Spotlight: Destroy Space Aliens
The monthly game spotlight for August is Destroy Space Aliens. This is one of the most surprising games that I’ve played for the Metroidvania Review Project, and I will always bring it up when talking about hidden gems. It has a really rough start, but if you can get past that you’re in for a fantastic homage to the genre as a whole. We will be streaming a start to finish playthrough starting on August 8th, so if our review isn’t enough to make you curious, you can check out a demonstration either on Twitch or our YouTube channel at that time.
August Review and Article Schedule
Disclaimer – While we work very hard to keep our schedule exactly as we’ve announced it, technical difficulties or surprise high priority review requests can require us to adjust the schedule accordingly. We will post an announcement any time this happens.
Below are the games we will be looking at this month.
Metroid: Other M – August 3
We wrap up the Metroid saga with the divisive direct sequel to Super Metroid. This whole year I’ve been playing these games in chronological order, so technically I should have done this game last month instead of Metroid Fusion. Predictably though I have a lot to say on this one, so it’s probably best I saved it for last. Review coming in two days!
Intrepid Izzy– August 10
A beat-em-up platformer that has you changing outfits to allow access to new areas and combat abilities. Its cute presentation is sure to provide a child-like sense of wonder to anyone who plays it.
UnEpic – August 17
An average dude suddenly finds himself living out the fantasies he used to role-play. We’ve already played @unepic_fran’s other game Ghost 1.0, so I’ve got a pretty good idea what to expect from UnEpic’s parody humor, and I look forward to it.
Super Daryl Deluxe – August 24
At long last we’ve finally finished a Co-op Metroidvania game this year. It’s one of the dumbest games I’ve ever played, but that dumbness may be its most appealing draw. It starts out pretty zany, but it still manages to top itself all the way until its ludicrous ending. The insanity is what keeps it fun.
Lyle in Cube Sector – August 31
Way back when the internet was still fresh there were a lot of indie freeware games that you only heard about by word of mouth. Some games like La-Mulana and Cave Story made it big, while others like Lyle in Cube Sector live on as hidden gems for niche audiences like us Metroidvania fans. Hopefully we can give it the exposure it may deserve.
