Spooky Ghosts Dot Com is launching at $5 and offers a modest 1-2 hour game time, therefore it joins Dungeon of Zolthan, Mini Ghost, and Paradox Soul as part of the “Mini Metroidvania” category of games on Steam. However, in spite of its short length it manages to be a cut above its budget competition with an actual coherent story, creative and challenging bosses, and incredibly cute presentation. If you’re looking for a short and sweet way to spend an evening, especially if you want to get into a silly and spooky Halloween mood, Spooky Ghosts Dot Com is definitely worth your time.

The story opens in a very clever way. Our Pink Haired Protagonist is busy looking at cat pictures on the internet when she receives a desperate email requesting her ghost busting services. Before you can say “What a twist!” antics ensue and suddenly you’re exploring a ghost infested mansion trying to put each and every specter out of its misery.

Combat is similar to Environmental Station Alpha; you have a medium ranged burst weapon that you later gain a charge shot upgrade for which increases its range and damage, and you have an air dash that makes you invincible when you use it. It lacks the incredible difficulty that Environmental Station Alpha eventually achieves, but its bosses are all just challenging enough with their well-designed telegraphs and mix-ups to leave a sweet taste behind.

Like with all of the other “Mini Metroidvanias” you’re not going to get a huge epic adventure like some of the other Metroidvanias available on Steam, but with its budget price and low commitment it’s impossible not to recommend Spooky Ghosts Dot Com to anyone looking for a fun time.
